Women’s History Month: Tina Turner Museum at Flagg Grove School – Brownsville, TN

by Chaundra Grant

This month we are learning a lot about Women’s history and royals. With that in mind, let’s take a moment to focus on our own Queen of Rock-and-Roll… Anna Mae Bullock! She’s more widely known as Tina Turner and hails from Nutbush, Tennessee.

Located in her childhood school, you can visit the world’s only Tina Turner Museum. It’s just off of Music Highway (Interstate 40 at Exit 56), between Memphis and Nashville, in historic Brownsville, Tennessee.

Turner is one of the best-selling recording artists of all time, having sold over 100 million records. She has been awarded 12 Grammy Awards, a Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award. Turner was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and is a 2005 recipient of the Kennedy Center Honors and was the first Black artist and first female to cover Rolling Stone

As a child, Turner attended Flagg Grove School which is now  part of the West Tennessee Delta Heritage Center featuring more than 8,000 square feet of exhibitions dedicated to West Tennessee music, cotton, and the scenic Hatchie River. This location is a prime staycation exploration destination that celebrates the culture and beauty of the West Tennessee Delta.

The gift shop is stocked with local and regional handmade items that will give you a true sense of the South. The heritage center is now open  for guided and self-guided tours.

Information for this piece was found at the official West Tennessee Delta Heritage Center website. Visit westtnheritage.com to learn more about the Tina Turner museum and other exhibits.
